Gardener's Dictionary: Rootbound
Rootbound (adj.): A container plant is rootbound when it has outgrown its container. Roots become entangled and matted together, and plant growth is stunted. When repotting a rootbound container plant, loosen the roots on the outer edges of the root ball to induce them to grow outward once transplanted.
