Public Gardens Listing: Miami Beach Botanical Garden (Miami Beach, FL))
While balcony container gardeners enjoy their small-space urban gardens, sometimes a few container plants on an apartment balcony above a busy street just isn’t peaceful enough. Balcony gardeners might not be able to have a peaceful, large garden, but there are public gardens and arboretums near every major city. Don’t just fawn over pictures of luxurious gardens, get out there and enjoy a day at a public garden! You may even bring some gardening inspiration home to your own balcony container garden.
If you live in or are visiting the Miami Beach, Florida, area, why not visit the Miami Beach Botanical Garden?
- The botanical garden actually began as a city park called “Garden Center” in 1962 across from the Miami Beach Convention Center, which was built 5 years prior. In 1996, Miami Beach Residents asked the city to create the nonprofit Miami Beach Garden Conservancy, which would restore the garden. Another 1.2-million renovation project was just completed in 2011.
- The 2.6-acre garden includes a Japanese garden, native garden, water gardens, a Great Lawn (for events) and more.
- Like many botanical gardens, the Miami Botanical Garden offers a “What’s In Bloom?” page on their website, listing the times of year that certain flowers will bloom at the garden. With this tool, you can plan your visit accordingly.
- Volunteer docents can lead you around the Miami Botanical Garden on Saturdays at 2pm (from October to May). The 30- to 45-minute tour is free, but there is a suggested donation of $5.
- Check the garden’s blog to see upcoming special events at the garden.
- You must pay to park by the hour, but the garden is small and you should be able to see everything relatively quickly.
