Gardener's Dictionary: Cultivar
Cultivar (n.): A variety of a plant species that has been intentionally selected and maintained through cultivation by humans. Cultivars are often much different than their wild counterparts, due to selective breeding in order to produce desireable characteristics. Many popular flowers for gardens are cultivars, having been selectively bred to display larger and more colorful blooms. There are also many fruit and vegetable cultivars, such as tomato plants, which are cultivated for larger or more tasty food products, to be disease-resistant, etc.
